Fibroscan® is a non-invasive test used to assess liver stiffness and detect liver diseases like fatty liver disease (MASLD/NAFLD), NASH, hepatitis B and C, autoimmune hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, Wilson disease, primary biliary cholangitis, and liver cancer (HCC). It is recommended for individuals with risk factors such as diabetes, high cholesterol (dyslipidemia), obesity, family history of cirrhosis, hypertension, and chronic liver diseases. Early detection through Fibroscan® helps in better disease management and improved health outcomes.
The procedure is simple and painless, similar to an ultrasound. A special probe is placed on the right upper abdomen after applying a gel to improve sound wave conduction. The probe sends sound waves into the liver to measure its stiffness, which helps evaluate the degree of fibrosis (scarring) and fat content. The test typically takes about 10–15 minutes, and most patients can resume normal activities immediately. Fibroscan® is completely painless and does not require anesthesia or sedation.
For accurate results, a 4-hour fasting period before the procedure is necessary. Fibroscan® is a reliable tool for diagnosing and monitoring liver health, helping to track disease progression, evaluate treatment response, and guide lifestyle changes. It provides immediate results and avoids the risks associated with invasive methods like a liver biopsy.
